March 21, 2006 --The Library Celebrates National Library Week

The 2006 National Library Week—the American Library Association’s annual celebration of America’s libraries and librarians—will be celebrated from April 3 to April 7.

This year, the Library of Rush University Medical Center and McCormick Educational Technology Center will be offering an exciting array of special events:

Rare Book Room Tour —Monday, April 3 & Friday, April 7, Noon to 1 pm on both days.
(The group will meet at the Library front lobby.)

Are you curious about what lies beyond the locked doors of the Rare Book Room on the 7th floor of the Library? During National Library Week, the Library will give you a chance to find out! Judith Dzierba, Cataloging/Archives Manager, and Heather Stecklein, Librarian/Archivist, will be holding tours of the Stanton A. Friedberg Rare Book Room. They will discuss the history of the room, explain the special storage conditions necessary for rare books, and demonstrate the ways that collectors recognize valuable books. Those who attend the tour will see books that are over 500 years old, works written by Rush’s founders, and items that exist in only a few libraries worldwide. Tour size is limited to 10, so sign up early for one of these must-see events. Please contact Jennifer Diehl at Jennifer_Diehl@rush.edu to RSVP.

February 16, 2006 -- New Exhibit Opens in Library

Library Opens Exhibit of Objects Swallowed by Children

Currently the Rush University Library has on display an exhibit of foreign objects that were removed from the air and food passages of young children by Dr. Stanton A. Friedberg, Sr. during the first decade of the twentieth century.

Dr. Friedberg collected the objects, including pins, buttons, coins, toys, and false teeth, from endoscopic procedures he performed at Presbyterian, Cook County and Children’s Memorial Hospitals. The objects are maintained by the Rush University Medical Center Archives.

The exhibit will be on display until June 16. For more information, contact the Rush University Medical Center Archives at ext. 2-7214 or Rush_Archives@rush.edu.

December, 2005
December 5, 2005 --Library Extends Hours

The Library will be extending its hours this coming weekend for finals. The schedule is:

Friday, December 9: 7 a.m. - midnight
Saturday, December 10: 9 a.m. - midnight
Sunday, December 11: 9 a.m. - midnight
We will be monitoring the number of people in the Library during extended hours to determine if it is cost-effective to offer extended hours for future midterms and finals weeks. We ask that you assist us in this by noting your college affiliation, year, and time of departure on an exit log when leaving the Library for the final time on Saturday and Sunday and that you provide this information on an entry log on Sunday morning.
