Distance Education Services

Any student enrolled in (only) online courses and not on site at the Rush campus may use the Library of Rush University services listed below. Unclassified students taking online courses who register up to two business days before the first day of the quarter will automatically be added to the Library’s patron database, giving them access to OVID. Electronic resources, including online journals, require a proxy server account. Directions for requesting this account are listed below.

Students who register for an online course less than two business days before the first day of the quarter can register for Library services in one of two ways: by filling out an online application form from the "Patron Registration" link off the Library’s home page, or by contacting the library director, Christine Frank (Christine_Frank@rush.edu, (312) 942-8735). Registration usually takes 24 hours.

PLEASE NOTE: Students who take online courses and are enrolled in a Rush University degree program (on or off-campus) are automatically registered for all Library services EXCEPT proxy server access which will enable you to access Library resources from home.

Proxy server registration can be completed on campus by completing the Student/Others Proxy Request form or if you are not on campus, by calling Rush's Information Services Help Desk at (312) 942-HELP.

If you need assistance with any of our services, please contact the Reference Services Department via phone at (312) 942-5952 or via e-mail at lib_ref@rush.edu. Please include your address and telephone number in your message. Generally, we will reply within one business day. Click here to see reference hours.

From the Library's Home page, students can:
Access to most of the Library's electronic databases and journals requires registration with the Library's proxy server or dial-up access through RushNET. Once registered for proxy server access you will receive your new proxy server account username and password via your Rush University e-mail account. This e-mail will contain a link to our home page where you will find instructions on how to configure your Web browser to work with the proxy server. Your access to the Library's electronic resources will be effective for the entire quarter for which you are registered. See Connecting to the Library from off campus for more information about applying for Rush dial-up service.

The following reference handouts are available to assist you with the databases:

Request an Article/Book Chapter Online

You must be a registered patron of the Library to submit a request.

Journal Article Requests: $7.00 for students, alumni, fund owners, or any patron who needs to be invoiced for payment.

Requests are processed daily, Monday though Friday. The department is not staffed on weekends, but you may submit your requests through ILLIAD at any time. Nearly 80% of all requests are filled within 3 business days. Obtaining older material can take longer. Requests for book chapters are handled as journal articles.

Please check RushCat before you submit your request. If you request an article to which the Library provides online access we will email you a link to the journal article and you will not be charged.

Requesting Books or Media Material: This service is available only to Rush University Medical Center faculty, staff and students registered with us and who are able to pick up material at the Library. Books, proceedings and dissertations average 14 days for delivery. All items must be picked up and returned to the Library. There is no charge for obtaining these materials. We are not able to extend this service to Distance Education Students unless they are willing to pick up and return the material at the Library. Distance Education Students should make arrangements with their local library to order books.

Our hours are Monday – Friday, 8 AM. to 5 PM. Requests submitted after 3 PM. will not be processed until the next morning.

PLEASE NOTE:

Because of time constraints, we will not be able to loan books, dissertations, or audiovisuals from our collection or borrow them from other libraries for distance education students. Please use your local libraries to obtain these types of materials. Requests submitted after 2 PM. will not be processed until the next business morning.
