What is Viramune and how is it used ?
Viramune belongs to a class of drugs called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase
inhibitors. Viramune is used in combination with other HIV medications
for the treatment of HIV infection. Viramune will be most effective if
it is taken in combination with other HIV medications.
How should Viramune be taken ?
The starting dose is one tablet (200 mg) taken once daily for 14 days.
If you are able to tolerate Viramune and do NOT develop a rash during
the first 14 days, then the dose is increased to one tablet twice a day.
The 14 day induction period is important because it decreases the chance
of developing a rash.
Viramune can be taken with or without food.
It is very important to try not to miss or skip any doses. The fewer doses a person skips the fewer opportunities the HIV virus has to develop resistance to the medication.
What are the potential side effects of Viramune ?
Rash is the most common side effect. The rash can occur anywhere on the
body and sometimes can be very serious. If you develop any type of rash, blisters, or mouth sores
call your medical provider immediately. If the rash occurs, it usually
appears in the first few weeks when Viramune is started.
What does Viramune look like ?
Viramune comes as a 200 mg white oval-shaped tablet with the numbers 54
193 printed on one side.
Are there potential drug interactions with Viramune ?
Yes- Please tell your medical provider and pharmacist about other medications
you are taking with Viramune.
