What is Lexiva?
Lexiva belongs to a class of drugs called protease inhibitors. Lexiva is used in combination with other HIV medications for the treatment of HIV infection. In order for Lexiva to work effectively it MUST be taken in combination with other HIV medications. Lexiva is a new and improved formulation of amprenavir (Agenerase).

How does Lexiva work?
Lexiva works by blocking a specific HIV enzyme that prevents HIV replication. When Lexiva is taken in combination with other HIV medications the goal is to prevent the virus from further weakening the immune system. If Lexiva is effective expect to see an increase in T-cells (CD4 T-lymphocytes) and decrease in HIV viral load.
Does Lexiva need to be taken every day?
Not everyone will respond to Lexiva, however you can improve your chances
Lexiva will work by taking ALL your medications everyday. Taking all your
medications on schedule everyday is the best way to keep the HIV virus
under control. Missing doses gives the virus a chance to develop resistance
and a resistant virus can be difficult to treat.
How should Lexiva be taken?
Lexiva is a 700 mg tablet. Lexiva can be taken once a day or twice a day
depending on what you and your healthcare provider agree on. Lexiva is
usually prescribed with a low dose of Norvir (ritonavir), the purpose
of Norvir is to increase or "boost" the levels of Lexiva in your body.

What are the potential side effects of Lexiva?
Lexiva is generally well tolerated. Some side effects may include nausea, fatigue, diarrhea, and rash. These symptoms are more likely to occur when Lexiva is started and typically resolve after a few weeks.
