What is Videx ?
Videx belongs to a class of drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase
inhibitors which are used to treat HIV infection. In order to treat HIV
effectively, Videx MUST be taken in combination with other HIV medications
as prescribed.
How does Videx work ?
Videx interferes with a very important HIV specific enzyme and impairs
the HIV viruses ability to replicate. Videx, like all nucleoside reverse
transcriptase inhibitors, interferes with a different HIV enzyme then
the protease inhibitors. When Videx is taken in combination with other
HIV medications the goal is to prevent the virus from further weakening
the immune system. If Videx is effective then you should expect to see
an increase in T-cells (CD4 immune cells) and decrease in viral load.
Not everybody responds to Videx, however you can improve the chance that
Videx will work by taking all your medications everyday.
What does Videx look like ?
Videx comes as a white capsule (Videx EC) or a large white chewable tablet
(about the size of a nickel).
What is the dose of Videx ?
The usual dose is 400 mg once a day. If you are taking Videx with Viread (Tenofovir) the videx dose should be reduced to 250mg. once a day.
How should Videx be taken ?
Videx should be taken on an
EMPTY stomach, (1-2 hours before or after a meal)
It is very important to try not to skip or miss any doses. The fewer doses a person skips the fewer opportunities the HIV virus has to develop resistance to the medication.
What are potential side effects of Videx ?
Videx EC is well tolerated, occasionally diarrhea, nausea, and headache can occur.
