What is Crixivan ?
Crixivan belongs to a class of drugs called protease inhibitors which are used to treat HIV infection. In order to treat HIV effectively,
Crixivan MUST be taken in combination with other HIV medications as prescribed.
How does Crixivan work ?
Crixivan interferes with a particular HIV specific enzyme. This enzyme is important because it allows for the
production of new HIV viruses which can infect more T-cells (CD4 immune cells). When Crixivan is taken in combination with other HIV medications the goal is to prevent the virus from further weakening the immune system. If Crixivan is effective then you should expect to see an increase in T-cells and decrease in HIV viral load. Not everybody responds to Crixivan, however you can improve the chance that Crixivan will work by taking all your medications everyday.
How to take Crixivan.
The usual dose of Crixivan is 800 mg (take two 400 mg capsules) every 8 hours
(or three times a day which is more convenient for most people), however Crixivan can also be used in combination with Norvir. When Crixivan and Norvir are
given together the Crixivan dose is different from above. Crixivan should be taken on an empty stomach with a glass of water, juice, or other beverage.
Crixivan may be taken with a light non-fat snack such as: toast, bagel, crackers, small sandwich, or bowl of cereal are examples. If Crixivan is used
in combination with Norvir there are no food restrictions.
It is very important to try not to miss or skip any doses. The fewer doses a person skips the fewer opportunities the HIV virus has to develop resistance to the medication.
What does Crixivan look like ?
Crixivan is a white capsule with the name Crixivan printed at one end and the strength in milligrams printed at the other end.
What are potential side effects of Crixivan ?
Crixivan may cause kidney stones, however this may be prevented by drinking plenty of fluids (six glasses a day) of water, juice, or other beverage (avoid alcohol). If you notice blood in urine or lower back pain this may be due to Crixivan kidney stones and you should call your medical provider immediately. Crixivan can also cause other side effects such as nausea, stomach discomfort, fatigue, headache, and dry skin.
Are there potential drug interactions with Crixivan ?
Yes, even drugs that do not require a prescription have been shown to interact with Crixivan, for example St. Johns Wort. Therefore, it is important to tell your medical provider all other medications you are taking.
