Agenerase belongs to a class of drugs called protease inhibitors which are used to treat HIV infection. In order to treat HIV effectively, Agenerase MUST be taken in combination with other HIV medications as prescribed.
How does Agenerase work ?
Agenerase interferes with a particular HIV specific enzyme. This enzyme
is important because it allows for the production of new HIV viruses which
can infect more T-cells (CD4 immune cells). When Agenerase is taken in
combination with other HIV medications the goal is to prevent the virus
from further weakening the immune system. If Agenerase is effective then
you should expect to see an increase in T-cells and decrease in HIV viral
load. Not everybody responds to Agenerase, however you can improve the
chance that Agenerase will work by taking ALL your medications everyday.
What does Agenerase look like ?
Agenerase is an white/cream colored 150 mg soft-gel capsule with the letters
GX-CC2 printed on one side.
How should Agenerase be taken ?
There is more then one dose for Agenerase. Some people may take eight
150 mg capsules twice a day (16 capsules a day). More often medical providers
are prescribing a lower dose of Agenerase in combination with another
protease inhibitor (Norvir). For example, Agenerase is often used in combination
with ritonavir (Norvir) at a dose of 600 mg Agenerase (4 capsules) + 100
mg ritonavir (1 capsule) twice a day. Agenerase can be taken with or without
food.
It is very important to try not to miss or skip any doses. The fewer doses a person skips the fewer opportunities the HIV virus has to develop resistance to the medication.
Who should NOT take Agenerase ?
Children under 4 years old should NOT take Agenerase.
What are potential side effects of Agenerase ?
Agenerase can cause nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and rash. Tell your medical
provider immediately if a rash develops while taking Agenerase. If you
are allergic to sulfa drugs, such as Bactrim or dapsone, then you need
to tell your medical provider before starting Agenerase.
Are there potential drug interactions with Agenerase ?
Yes !! Agenerase can interact with other medications, therefore it is
important to tell your medical provider and pharmacist about any other
medications you are also taking with Agenerase. Agenerase capsules contain
large amounts of vitamin E, therefore do not take vitamin E supplements
while taking Agenerase.
