What is Epivir ?
Epivir belongs to a class of drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase
inhibitors which are used to treat HIV infection. In order to treat HIV
effectively, Epivir MUST be taken in combination with other HIV medications
as prescribed.
How does Epivir work ?
Epivir interferes with a very important HIV specific enzyme and impairs
the HIV viruses ability to replicate. Epivir, like all nucleoside reverse
transcriptase inhibitors, interferes with a different HIV enzyme then
the protease inhibitors. When Epivir is taken in combination with other
HIV medications the goal is to prevent the virus from further weakening
the immune system. If Epivir is working then you should expect to see
an increase in T-cells (CD4 immune cells) and decrease in HIV viral load.
How to take Epivir
Epivir can be taken with or without food. Epivir comes as a 150mg and 300mg tablet. The usual dose is 300mg once a day.
It is very important to try not to miss or skip any doses. The fewer doses a person misses the fewer opportunities the HIV virus has to develop resistance to the medication.
What does Epivir look like ?
Epivir is a white diamond shaped tablet with GX CJ7 printed on
one side and 150 on the other side. The 300mg tablet is blue/grey in color.
What are potential side effects of Epivir ?
Epivir is very well tolerated and has few side effects.
